You’ve gotten faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat...

TEW864X
was first registered between August ‘81 and July ‘82 in
Peterborough
.
Edit to add: for those curious about fourvalleys’ legacy plate.

Wow little bro, you really let yourself go.

The newer one is an R50 (‘02-’06), which is the smallest of the BMW Minis. They’ve gotten noticeably bigger even since then. I parked next to a F56 Cooper (‘13+) earlier this year, and it was crazy. I thought it was a Clubman at first!

Always surprises me when I see the difference in siz
Also, tell me more about the older one. Can never remember how thethe registration numbers work, but that looks to be either a mk4 or mk5 Austin, right?

I’m part of a mini club and everyone has bmw minis but me; they talk bad about how big minis are getting and brag about theirs being real minis. I always bite my tongue out of politeness.

Partially because its owners have! That and safety.

The Englander visiting his colonial cousin was taken rather aback by the sight that greeted him.

Also, a little more backstory - my Mini is NOT a 1981! The rear glass was replaced at some point and the replacement has TEW 864X etched onto the glass.
I just like that they match, even if it’s the wrong year. I didn’t want to get a Euro-plate with words on it, and this is better than random numbers/letters!

more rust on this , i’m guessing.

The letter on the end - x in this case - changed on the 1st August each year. EW was the area and the other characters were sequential. There’s a different system now.
![]() 08/10/2015 at 10:05 |

Correct! This plate is not correct for the year of the car, but that’s okay - most people won’t ever notice or care.

You’re carrying on the legacy of a Mini one assumes is fallen nobly in battle. Come back with your rear glass or parted out - kind of like a shield.

Huh, having seen the post above this saying the plate is off a 1981 car, even if I did understand it, it would just be more confusing. Yours looks to be at least 3 years newer than that, and looks to be in great shape

Ha! Every time I see the other classic Mini owners in the area (there aren’t many... but there are a few ) I think about how mine is so incredibly not-original, but still looks very close.
It’s been repainted, almost none of the parts are original, but the condition of everything makes it look like it’s been the same for the past 40 years. It drives like it, too.

Don’t let the side indicators fool you - they aren’t original. Neither are the seats (Austin Metro).
I hate both.

Location identifier, then age identifier, then random letters.

Series Landies, my main thing, have an incredibly strong tendency to be mix’n’match. The outer fenders and front doors on mine didn’t come with the rest of the body, the rear door has been reskinned, the floorboards in the back came from a wrecked donor, the chassis came from another donor, the engine was swapped before I got it, and the two axles came from other donors still. We did one for my cousin, and his inner/front front fenders, rear bucket, and some other pieces came from donors or NOS, with an all new chassis.

My younger sister is saving for a Riley Elf. It’ll be a while, but there’s something to be said for a pretentious Mini with more trunk space, a goofy face, and a leather/wood interior - and they’re not really all that expensive!

Ah, there's a lot of parts on there that threw me off. Thanks for the reply

Awesome! There was one at British Car Field Day in June. So weird, so cool.

The desire to own a classic mini is so strong but the wife hates them :(

That’s the post-2001 system, that Mini has the old one.
T: sequential
EW: Peterborough
864: sequential
X: Aug 81 to Jul 82
Nowadays Peterborough is A followed by a letter from A to N (excl I) then two digit year code and three random letters.

How is that possible?!
![]() 08/10/2015 at 10:31 |

Yes, hence why I posted that, since you said:
There’s a different system now.
Just to give people some information about the new and different system.
:)

That’s cool too, I suppose. Still, this is the slowest and most fun car I’ve owned.
It’s hard to dislike it when half the people you see smile and wave.

Wow, I know Austin coopers are tiny, but it’s not often you see them right next to each other. My fiancee has got an R52, her dream car is a original cooper.

That’s awesome!
Here’s mine next to a friends “new” Mini.
